Cycling in Central Otago, New Zealand is the best fun. We spent a leisurely 5 days on the Otago Rail Trail over Easter weekend in 2016. The journey took us through old historic gold-mining villages,. We enjoyed meals and accommodation in country pubs and the rugged scenery was breath taking.
Most people we know complete the trip in 3 days but as I was still unwell we decided to take our time. There is so much to do along the way that we took one whole day off the trail to sight see and take curling lessons at Naseby. You will need to book in for curling as these slots fill up months in advance. Initially we planned to take our own bikes but so glad we didn’t. Tour operators, Trail Journeys, were awesome. They booked everything, even down to a hire car for the day off and our curling lessons. Each day they collect your luggage and take it to the next stop. Our bikes were comfortable, (hire a padded seat cover) easy to ride and I could even have hired an electric bike, though the gradient is not difficult.
The annual Clyde Wine and Food Festival takes place on Easter Sunday – and if you can work your schedule it is not to be missed, so plan your ride around it. We enjoyed this trip so much we plan to head back with some of our kids and then perhaps again also with my sister. If you want to make a cycling holiday of it, there are other similar journeys quite nearby.
